About Our Sleep Care Center
Your Sleep Well-Being Keeps Us Awake at Night
Comprehensive sleep testing, conducted in a comfortable home-like environment, is the mission of the Sleep Care Center at Bayshore, providing comprehensive data crucial to the proper diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders in both children and adults.
- Do you regularly wake up tired, even after a full night's sleep?
- Does your sleep partner complain about your snoring, gasping, and thrashing while you are asleep?
- Do you have difficulty falling asleep at night, and staying awake during the day?
These issues can be addressed using the results compiled by the trained sleep technologists and analyzed by a sleep specialist physician, all aimed at determining sleep ailments.
Sleep Testing
There are several types of evaluations that can be performed at the Sleep Care Center at Bayshore, which houses two private bedrooms furnished with queen-size beds and televisions for patients' comfort. Tests are generally performed at night, although daytime testing is available for patients who work night shifts.
- Polysomnogram (PSG) – This overnight study uses state-of-the-art equipment to monitor sleep patterns, breathing, snoring, heart rhythm, blood oxygen levels and leg movements while the patient is asleep. Results are promptly evaluated by a specialized sleep physician, who provides a diagnosis and treatment recommendation to the patient's primary care physician.
- CPAP/BiPAP Titration Study – Once sleep apnea is determined, indicating that the upper airways repeatedly collapse during sleep, a CPAP study is frequently recommended. Wearing a breathing mask, a continuous stream of air is gently blown into the patient's lungs, at varying pressures, to determine the optimum level that allows the airways to remain unobstructed during sleep.
- Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) – Used to aid in the diagnosis of narcolepsy, a disorder causing excessive daytime sleepiness, an MSLT study monitors brain waves and eye movement over the course of several naps taken during the day.
- Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) – This daytime test evaluates a patient's ability to stay awake and alert during the day. It is often administered to workers in particular jobs, to assess the potential risk of work-related accidents due to sleepiness.
