Advance Directives
Both
New Jersey and the U.S. government have laws governing advance directives,
also called living wills. Hospitals are mandated to honor the wishes of
their patients who have them. When you are admitted, you will be asked if
you have such a document. If you do, you should bring a copy of it with
you to the hospital.
A living will spells out the wishes of an individual regarding advanced
life support, heroic measures and durable power of attorney should the
patient be unable to communicate those wishes personally during a medical
emergency.
If you need information on how to prepare an advance directive, there are
several people at Bayshore Community Hospital who can help you.
