Meridian Stroke Centers Receive Get With The Guidelines® Gold Plus Performance Achievement Awards

Neptune, NJ -

Three Meridian hospitals have received the 2011 American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award.  The award recognizes Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Ocean Medical Center, and Riverview Medical Center for their commitment and success in implementing excellent care for stroke patients, according to evidence-based guidelines.

In order to gain recognition each Stroke Center, affiliated with Meridian Neuroscience, achieved an eighty-five percent compliance with the Get With The Guidelines® measures for 12 consecutive months.  In addition, each hospital also demonstrated seventy-five percent compliance to seven out of ten Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Quality Measures during the 12-month period.  These measures analyzed the quality of care provided by each hospital, and included aggressive use of medications, such as tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis, cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation, all geared towards improving the lives of stroke patients and, ultimately, reducing death and disability.

"The Meridian Neuroscience Stroke Centers strive to provide our community with the highest quality of stroke care in the region," says Stephen Martino, M.D., medical director of the stroke centers at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Ocean Medical Center. "We are extremely proud that Get With The Guidelines® has recognized Meridian for using advanced, proven treatment options to effectively treat patients."

"We are pleased to recognize Meridian as a top Get With The Guidelines® participant," said. Lee Schwamm, M.D., national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines® steering committee, associate professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and Vice Chairman of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. "Meridian Health Neuroscience is armed with the latest evidence-based guidelines and immediate access to clinical decision support, using a set of tools that have been shown to improve delivery of evidence-based care."

Get With The Guidelines® is a hospital-based quality-improvement program designed to ensure that hospitals consistently care for stroke and heart patients utilizing the most up-to-date guidelines and recommendations. Currently more than 1,400 hospitals participate in the program.

"Receiving the Get With The Guidelines® Gold Plus Award provides Jersey Shore, Riverview and Ocean with national stroke care recognition, and also goals and standards for staff to follow when conducting stroke care throughout the year," says Noah Gilson, M.D., medical director of the stroke center at Riverview. "Professionals throughout Meridian Neuroscience have full access to the tools and reports they need to efficiently treat our patients."

All three Stroke Centers are part of the Meridian Neuroscience, providing quality diagnoses and treatment for a range of conditions including stroke.
