Meridian Cancer Care Welcomes Ghulam Abbas, M.D., MCHM, FACS

Fellowship Trained Surgeon Joins Meridian Cancer Care as Director of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery  

Red Bank, NJ - Meridian Cancer Care proudly welcomes Ghulam Abbas, M.D., MCHM, FACS, a fellowship trained cardiothoracic and minimally invasive thoracic and foregut surgeon. Dr. Abbas joins Meridian Cancer Care as the Director of minimally invasive thoracic surgery. In this position, Dr. Abbas will advance and broaden the program’s minimally invasive thoracic surgery capabilities, including robotic and video assisted approaches to the lung, chest and esophageal regions.

For the past eight years, Dr. Abbas has served as an assistant professor of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Medical Center. He completed fellowship training in minimally invasive thoracic and foregut surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and cardiothoracic surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Prior to his fellowship training, Dr. Abbas completed his general surgery residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York. He also holds a master’s degree in health care management from Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Abbas has a wide-range of clinical interests including robotic-assisted thoracic surgery, video assisted thoracic surgery as well as CyberKnife. Throughout his career, Dr. Abbas has held a number of administrative appointments including chairman of the Department of Surgery for UPMC Passavant, in Pittsburgh, and chief of general thoracic surgery at UPMC Mckeesport and Passavant. Additionally, Dr. Abbas is an active member in the American College of Surgeons, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Chest Physicians, Society of Robotic Surgery and American College of Physician Executives. He has also contributed to more than 30 medical publications, and has lectured nationally and internationally.

As a member of the Meridian Cancer Care Team, Dr. Abbas will be based at Riverview Medical Center and Bayshore Community Hospital, while also maintaining privileges throughout Meridian Cancer Care, including Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, Ocean Medical Center in Brick and Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin.
