Cancer Care
Bayshore Community Health Services has raised the bar of excellence once again with the arrival of a top oncologist and a new cancer care program—part of our ongoing effort to provide Central New Jersey with the best care available.  Michael Joel Kane, M.D., F.A.C.P., heads the Bayshore cancer team as medical director of oncology.  In this role, he will work to serve the needs of cancer patients and help raise awareness of cancer prevention and education.

Dr. Kane is a nationally known oncologist who was most recently selected for inclusion in "The Best Doctors in America" and "Best Doctors in the New York Metro Area," as well as "Top Docs" in New Jersey and "Top Docs for Women." Dr. Kane recognizes the role his staff plays in his success, and works with the Bayshore cancer team to help improve the lives of cancer patients every day.

"Successful cancer care is a team effort, with doctors, nurses, therapists, and family members each playing a key role in the care of a patient," says Dr. Kane.

Comprehensive Care
The oncology program at Bayshore features a variety of services—all delivered by caring professionals. These services include:
New oncology services at Bayshore will emphasize counseling and complementary
programs such as yoga and music therapy. In addition, clinical trials will be introduced in the
coming months.

"A comprehensive approach to cancer care allows our patients to benefit from many aspects of medicine," says Dr. Kane. "We utilize all of our resources to ensure each patient receives the best possible care. Patients are our top priority, and we want to lead them on the road to recovery and remission."

  Radiation Oncology
Bayshore Community Hospital offers radioactive seed implantation therapy for the treatment of prostate cancer. This procedure involves a one-time insertion of tiny low-level radioactive seeds into the prostate under ultrasound guidance.

During the radioactive seed implantation, between 50 to 100 rice-size seeds are injected through the skin into the prostate. The procedure only takes 45 minutes. Over the next several months, the seeds release enough radiation to destroy the cancer without damaging other tissues. The end result is an effective treatment with little or no side effects. The seeds become motionless once the radiation has been released.

The procedure is another viable option for patients with early stage prostate cancer. Traditionally, treatment has meant surgery, chemotherapy or external beam radiation.

For the appropriate patient, radioactive seed implants may avoid the problems of some of the other treatments, yet the procedure equals their success rates.

Aside from being up to 50 percent less expensive than surgery, this procedure offers important quality-of-life advantages over the traditional treatments. Significant rates of incontinence and impotence are avoided with the radioactive seed procedure. An added benefit to this procedure is a quick return to normal activities, usually in one to three days.

Consult with your urologist or your attending physician to find out which treatment is best for you.

Dr. Kane: Novel Therapeutic Methods
In the Treatment of Breast Cancer

Michael J. Kane, M.D., F.A.C.P., medical director of the Bayshore Community Hospital oncology program, recently addressed medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, surgeons, internists, medical residents, nurses, nurse practitioners and hematology/oncology fellows at the Richmond University Medical Center Multidisciplinary Tumor Conference on Staten Island.

Dr. Kane lectures frequently on breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, osteoporosis and genetic testing to the medical community as well as to the general public. In May, Dr. Kane was a keynote presenter at "Women Taking Charge of their Health," a one-day Brookdale Community College women's conference. "As we expand our oncology program here at Bayshore Community hospital," said Dr. Kane, "it is important to get the word out to both medical professionals and the community at large."
