Early defibrillation is part of the American Heart Association's focus on
the chain of survival, particularly in the initial links, which include:
- Knowing the signs of sudden cardiac arrest in order to recognize a medical
emergency when it occurs
- Calling 9-1-1 to immediately access the emergency medical system
- Administering CPR, because this can help keep the cardiac arrest victim
alive until emergency help arrives
- Early defibrillation, or the delivery of an electrical shock to the heart
within the first few minutes after cardiac arrest
- Bayshore's Community Training Center, an AHA training center, offers the
AED Provider Course for first responders and lay rescuers (community
members).
