Emergency Medicine
The John Boyd & Kathryn Roberta Mitchell Pavilion for Emergency Services at Bayshore Community Hospital is comprised of board-certified physicians, registered nurses, patient representatives and technicians experienced in treating patients with emergency health conditions. The support staff consists of registrars, unit secretaries and volunteer advocates, all important members of our team.

Emergency Triage
Triage is an assessment made by registered nurses in the Emergency Department as to the severity of injury or illness to determine if immediate treatment is necessary. In the Emergency Department, it is extremely important that the most seriously ill and injured patients are seen first.

The triage nurse will check your vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, breathing and pulse), take a brief medical history and evaluate your condition.

If your condition is critical, medical care is given immediately. If you require immediate attention, you will be escorted into a treatment area. Otherwise, you will be asked to take a seat in the waiting area until a nurse takes you into a treatment area.

If your condition is not critical, the triage nurse will provide treatment in accordance with your illness or injury.

Registering in the Emergency Department
When you arrive at the Emergency Department, the registrar will obtain information about your physician, your insurance carriers and your medical history. This information is very important in your treatment. You will also be asked to sign consent forms for treatment.

Your Treatment in the Emergency Department
Once you are in the treatment areas, you will be seen by a nurse and a physician. Your own physician may also be called. Your treatment may require certain diagnostic testing such as X-rays or laboratory tests.

Emergency Department Physicians
Bayshore Community Hospital is one of the few healthcare facilities in New Jersey whose physicians are all board certified in Emergency Medicine. Be assured that you will receive the highest quality of care possible at Bayshore.

Emergency Department Staff
The Emergency Department nurses are certified in Coronary Care, Advanced Life Support and many of our RN's are certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Emergency Nursing.

Our Registered Nurses have years of emergency experience and provide the best blend of quality and compassion possible to their patients.

Patient representatives serve as a liaison and resource between a patient, family and the medical staff. The representative's goal is to alleviate your concerns by explaining the Emergency Department process, as well as providing comfort.

Diagnostic Testing Detects Aneurysm

Christopher Stevens

"Chest pain can be anything," says cardiologist Raed Jitan, MD, FACC, "but a life-threatening aneurysm is infrequent." Fortunately though, when 44-year old Christopher Stevens, a Brick resident, arrived at the John Boyd and Kathryn Roberta Mitchell Pavilion for Emergency Services at Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel complaining of a pulled muscle after lifting a case of apples at the Stop + Shop in Aberdeen where he is an assistant produce manager, the physicians and staff were reluctant to simply send him home.

"Diagnosis is the key," continues Jitan. "We ruled out heart attack. There were no previously existing conditions such as diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, a sedentary lifestyle, or previous heart disease. His symptoms were not typical of an aneurysm yet we suspected some problem with his heart."
