Bayshore’s Diabetes Education Program Merits ADA Recognition
The prestigious American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for a quality diabetes self-management education program was recently awarded to Diabetes Education Program at Bayshore Community Health Services. The Diabetes Education Program at Bayshore was originally recognized in May, 1996. The ADA believes that this program offers high-quality education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment.

The Association’s Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Program. These Standards were developed and tested under the auspices of the National Diabetes Advisory Board in 1983 and were revised by the diabetes community in 1994 and 2000.

Programs apply for Recognition voluntarily. Programs that achieve Recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide participants with comprehensive information about diabetes management. "The process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide," comments Wendy Brown, vice president of patient care services at Bayshore. "And it assures the consumer that he or she will likely receive high-quality service." Education Recognition status is verified by an official certificate from ADA and awarded for three years.

Bayshore Community Hospital presents a comprehensive program designed to provide skills and knowledge necessary to lead a healthy life with diabetes.

Recent findings in diabetes research demonstrate that controlling blood glucose levels can prevent or prolong the onset of diabetes-related complications. Unfortunately, diabetes is the number one cause of new blindness, kidney disease and amputation. The diabetes self-management training program covers the entire array of topics needed by an individual for the care of their diabetes.

Upon admission to the training program, an assessment is completed for each participant and the program is adapted to your individual needs. Family participation is encouraged, and the schedule of classes and individual sessions is flexible to accommodate participants. With the training, skill development and education this program will provide, you will be able to positively effect your blood sugar control.

The comprehensive program consists of group classes and individual sessions with a certified diabetes educator, a registered dietitian, physical therapist and a social worker.

Patients and their families learn the "survival skills" of diabetes self-management including: insulin injections and medications, meal planning, blood glucose monitoring, foot care and more.
