Dr. Ani Performs Area's First Minimally Invasive Spinal Fusion At Bayshore
How important is fast pain relief?
Physicians at Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel are committed to changing lives by using precise medical skills and emerging, new technologies. Nassar Ani, MD, FACS, FRCSc, recently introduced a surgical procedure, performing the area's first minimally-invasive spinal fusion. The procedure brought almost instantaneous relief to a Cliffwood Beach resident suffering from chronic lower back pain.
Dr. Ani, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Bayshore, performed the minimally-invasive procedure in under an hour, requiring only three tiny incisions approximately a half centimeter in size. The patient returned home the same day.
"Working with a highly-trained operating room team was key to performing the new procedure as well as utilizing new high-tech equipment." explains Dr. Ani.
Lumbar fusion is a procedure commonly performed for degenerative disc disease and instability in an attempt to stabilize the spine. Interventional Spine™ (based in Irvine, California) provided the instruments for Dr. Ani to perform posterior lumbar stabilization and achieve lumbar fusion at two levels with the PERPOS™ System. These prepackaged, single-use, sterile instruments engineered for percutaneous implantation allow for minimal disruption to the soft tissue.
"This procedure is done without cutting through muscle, which would take weeks or months to heal," says Dr. Ani. "The system allows me to fuse the disc, then use tiny screws to stabilize the spine. For our patients, it means little to no hospital stay, less post-operative pain, a shorter recovery period, and almost immediate relief from the original pain prior to the procedure."
