Bayshore
Community Hospital's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is an outpatient
program for individuals who may have breathing difficulties or chronic
breathing problems resulting from Chronic Bronchitis, Asthma or Emphysema;
have been diagnosed with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease); are
scheduled to have or recently have had either a lung transplant or lung
volume reduction surgery; or simply experience shortness of breath with
minimal exertion.
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program teaches proper breathing techniques,
nutrition, medication usage, oxygen therapy and supervised exercise
conducted by a Respiratory Therapist and a Registered Nurse.
The basic goals of the Pulmonary Program are as follows:
- To decrease respiratory symptoms and complications
- To encourage self-management and control over daily functioning
- To improve physical conditioning and exercise performance
- To improve emotional well-being
- To reduce hospitalizations
This program is extremely individualized to each person's unique breathing
condition. It allows each individual to perform physical activity under
the supervision of trained personnel, during which time, their physical
progress, medication and vital signs are continually monitored. Ongoing
educational programs are also offered and our staff is always available to
answer any question or concerns an individual may have on all aspects of
chronic breathing problems.
Bayshore's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program participated as a satellite
facility in the National Emphysema Treatment Trials (NETT), a national
trial developed through the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a
division of the National Health Institute, Bethesda, MD, to show whether
COPD patients will benefit more from medical or surgical management.
Aggressive pulmonary rehabilitation is an ongoing part of both options. As
a satellite center for New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia
Presbyterian Center for Lung Failure, the rehabilitation component is
provided for lung transplant and lung volume reduction surgery patients in
both pre- and post-operative phases of surgery, as well as to COPD
patients requiring medical management.
